Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Betty Wang” by Hospitality from the 2012 self-titled album on Merge.
New York City’s Hospitality was formed in 2007, following multi-instrumentalist Nathan Michel’s 2005 solo effort The Beast. Combining his bedroom pop talents with the vocals and lyrical prowess of Amber Papini, the trio rounded out their number with bassist Brian Betancourt, forming a formidable lineup. Throw in production from Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells), and you’ve got a powerhouse of a group fiercely clawing their way to the top. Their self-titled debut is uproarious, combining swinging horn riffs with thundering guitars and power pop vocals that inspire wide grins. Today’s track, “Betty Wang,” is softer than some of their other offerings, but remains instantly catchy official soccer jerseys, fusing chamber pop flourishes with a classic rock setup.
While there’s no listed Seattle dates on Hospitality’s current tour, they will be live on KEXP from the Cutting Room Studios NYC on Monday, February 20, at 9:00am. Tune in for this exclusive session, and hear more songs from the band on their Facebook page. For now, check out the video for “Friends of Friends” while you wait!
