Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Puritan” by Widowspeak from their self-titled album on Captured Tracks.
Today, we offer up the opening track on the debut album from Widowspeak, a band made up of two-thirds Tacoma ex-pats (they all now currently in Brooklyn). Their minimalistic/ambient nostalgia-drenched music is definitely catching ears across the country based off of a 7” single and their recent release of their full-length debut on Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks (also home to Thee Oh Sees and Craft Spells). For a band whose start was tentative — singer Molly Hamilton and drummer Michael Stasiak both contributed to a Tacoma music compilation before moving separately to New York, where Stasiak had to convince Hamilton to join up with him — Widowspeak confidently blends psych rock elements with 50’s/60’s style surf pop sans the fuzz and distortion giving the listener more time to fall in love with Hamilton’s smoky yet cool vocals. Guitarist Robert Earl Thomas adds a nice jangle to Stasiak’s solid beats; together they provide a nice contrast to keep the music from becoming too ethereal or too abrasive. Today’s featured song, “Puritan,” makes a perfect introduction to the band’s engaging sound.
No Seattle dates are listed as of now, but Widowspeak is currently finishing up a tour with Vivian Girls and will be at the Knitting Factory in NYC next Tuesday, September 20.
