Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Kounandi” by Los Chicharrons from the 2011 album Roots of Life on Tummy Touch Records.
Ramon Santana and Morten Varano’s personal backgrounds are just about as diverse as their music. In fact, by all appearances the two couldn’t be more different. Santana, born in the Dominican Republic and transplanted to New York, was a gritty and talented DJ on the rise. As fate (or fortune) would have it, his work in dance clubs would eventually connect him Morten Varano, a graduated Psychologist from Copenhagen, who just also happened to be a talented DJ/Musician/Producer. The two would later form the unlikely duo known as Los Chicharrons, and the rest, as they say, is history. More Roots than Latin, more Dance than Salsa, their name implies something different than you might expect, but make no mistake, this is Afro Funk/House music made for clubs and dancing. Set for a Feb 21st release date, Roots of Life is the duo’s fourth full-length album and a purposeful collision of international styles and influences. The album was recorded in Mali, Paris, London and Copenhagen and features guest vocals by Mama Draba, Saramba Koyaté & Tom Diakité. Our featured song “Kounandi” is the first track on the new album and a perfect example of the sort of wild sonic fusion you can expect from Los Chicharrons.
Currently, no shows are scheduled for the duo, but you can listen to more songs on their Myspace page as well as their own website. There are no videos of the band to be found either, so here’s a sweet remix of their song “Ma Do Nar” to keep your rump shaking:
