Each and every Friday we offer songs from local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Michigan” by Explone from the 2010 self-released album Dreamers/Lovers.
Explone is a band with roots right here in the overgrown yards of Seattle. The latest brainchild of former Red Jacket Mine guitarist Patrick Porter, Explone first caught our attention back in 2005 with the release of their powerfully poppy debut, Crooks. While Porter and drummer Josh Williams made the entirety of Crooks on their own, the two-man outfit quickly morphed into a legitimate band, taking on Scott Andrew playing bass and Kyle Stevens on second guitar. In the years following the debut, Explone has gained an increasingly large following throughout the Northwest and beyond playing their special brand of lovelorn guitar powered pop.
Quite a long time in the making, today’s featured track, “Michigan,” comes from Explone’s newest self-released effort, (and second LP, entitled Dreamers/Lovers. With the help again of producer Shawn Simmons (Jen Wood, Grand Hallway, The Devil Whale), the new album finds inspiration in a multitude of influences from the guitar heavy melodies of Cheap Trick to the punk rock introspection of Husker Du. “Michigan” in particular also taps into a classic-rock vein that adds to the overall nostalgia inherent to Explone’s popular sound.
